Rocky Mountain National Park
One of the main reasons people come to Estes Park is to explore the wonders of nature in Rocky Mountain National Park. With varying elevations and habitats, the park provides an array of activities for everyone. From scenic drives and leisure strolls along gentle trails to more strenuous daylong hikes and vertical mountain climbs, Rocky Mountain National Park offers many ways to experience nature in all its glory.
The Rocky Mountain National Park is 416 square miles of rocky wildness. There are 60 mountains over 12,000 feet. At 14,259 feet, Longs Peak is the highest in northern Colorado which is clearly visible from Lake Shore Lodge. Although the great peaks comprise the essence of the park, the fragile alpine flowers, glacier-fed lakes, rushing mountain waters, and impressive pine forests appeal to all the senses. The possibility of seeing wildlife, such as, bighorn sheep, marmot, coyote and elk add excitement to the landscape.
Get a park pass and explore this wilderness as many times as you can during your stay in Estes Park. If your time is limited, try to take the half day drive up Trail Ridge Road. Touring above the tree line at 11,500 feet, where the park's evergreen forests come to a halt, can be a bit daunting but well worth the effort. The views and the drive are breathtaking and not to be missed.
